Net Impact Schulich - Capitalism 2.0

As the world grapples with the recent economic crisis, the exposure of unethical practices in the financial system, the emergence of the 'Occupy' movement, and global climate change, civic and business leaders are beginning to realize the need for a fundamentally different approach that goes beyond 'business as usual'. It is no longer about CSR or track-on sustainability initiatives, the business leaders of tomorrow need to know how business if fundamentally changing to address the environmental, social and business challenges of the future. There is an urgent need to drive ideas into action. Welcome to the world of Capitalism 2.0.
On February 8, Schulich Net Impact will be hosting this conference. It will be an opportunity to engage in thought provoking dialogue with local leaders, industry professionals and other students on what companies are doing to embrace this change and the broader systemic transformation that will be necessary. The conference explores the tough questions from how to re-frame business goals to how to rethink how markets are structured. Speakers at the conference will provide real life examples as to how businesses are currently innovating to shift the way they operate and the challenges and opportunities they are faced with in the process. In many cases, the system is changing as we speak.

We hope to inspire, educate, and connect students to the importance of good business practices and that its underlying motive can be more than just the bottom line. Although it may be difficult, it is surely not impossible to succeed financially while doing good.

The facility is the first Platinum LEED certified manufacturing building across all industries in Canada. Doug will be speaking about renewable energy and sustainable development! SolarG is a social purpose enterprise founded in 2006, and focuses on greenhouse gas reductions by developing solutions which both reduce GHG levels and have a net positive benefit to world society.

Join us for an information session regarding food waste at the University of Guelph. The session provides more details and an opportunity for you to ask questions about how to get involved. This will be a challenge, since food waste is a difficult issue and can be approached from a multitude of dimensions. Students are encourage to innovate and build sustainable plans of action. Prizes and deadlines will be discussed. Please e-mail us for any other questions.
Update: Net Impact Guelph unfortunately was not able to garner enough interest to organize and invest in the competition. However, if you are still interested, please send us an e-mail to netimpactguelph[at]gmail.com!
